Tripuri’s capital, Agartala, is a place of immense historical and mythological importance. Situated on the banks of Howrah river, this beautiful city has a subtropical climate; it rains here nearly all year long. There’s much to see and do in Agartala, from temples to churches, monasteries and mosques. However, these are the places you absolutely must see when in Agartala.

The erstwhile royal residence of Agartala, Ujjayanta Palace is set amidst lush green Mughal Gardens and a quaint lake. There are various temples dedicated to Hindu gods and goddesses around the palace, there’s a library, darbar room, throne room, and a reception hall inside the palace. There’s a Chinese Room that attracts a lot of travellers; adorned with intricate artistry done by Chinese craftsmen. There’s a museum too with a huge collection of artefacts depicting the culture, tradition, art, and history of northeast India.

Embellished with beautiful rock carvings of Lord Shiva, Unakoti hill are found amidst lush greenery and cascading waterfalls. The most prominent feature of this hill is the 30 feet tall head of Lord Shiva, also known as the Unakoteswara Kal Bhairava.

 

  • Beautiful Dumboor Lake In Tripura :-

Situated amidst picturesque hills packed with vegetation, the Dumboor Lake is a perfect holiday destintion to take a trour, it is one of the major attractions of Tripura, India. Airport : Nearest airport is at Agartala. You can pick a bus or taxi from her to reach the lake. The Agartala airport connects Tripura to the rest of India by air.Railhead : The nearest rail station is at Kumarghat of NF railway. From here you can reach the place by road.
Road Transport : The is about 110 km away from Agartala. You can Travel by buses, private taxies and rickshaws from here to reach the lake.

  • Beautiful Ujjayanta Palace :-

The Ujjayanta Palace is formerly a royal palace of the Tripura, situated in the state of Agartala. Built in 1901, it has magnificent tiled floors, carved wooden ceilings and lovely doors.

The name ‘Ujjayanta Palace’ was given by Rabindranath Tagore, a regular visitor of Tripura. The palace includes the Public halls, Throned room, Durbar Hall, Library, The Chinese Room and The Reception Hall. The palace has now been converted into a museum, becoming the largest museum in the northeastern part of India.It has been renamed as the Tripura State museum. The museum is famous for its overarching theme of ethnic richness of the region
as the visitors can view the diversified culture and traditions under one roof. The sombre walls and shelves of the museum are replete with sketches,drawings, textiles, coins, terracotta, oil paintings, sculptures, bronze images, tribal ornaments and musical instruments, and several other art objects.

  • Famous Jagannath Temple in Agartala :-

Located next to the Ujjayanta Palace, Jagannath Temple is famous not only from the pilgrim’s point of view but also a remarkable architectural feat.
The pillars are crowned by square and pyramidal cones. The temple is decorated with bright orange structured Shikharas. Jagannath Temple exterior is a wonderful example of fusion of Hindu and Arabic style of architecture.

Temple is an eminent shrine is dedicated to Hindu Gods Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. It is said that the idol of Neel madhav or Lord
Jagannath at Puri have been donated from this shrine. Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya had built the temple in the 19th century. The temple is ornate with
illuminated orange structured Shikharas and the structure is inspired by the Islamic architectural style.
There is nice exhibition in the form of lovely decorations on the life of Lord Krishna along with beautiful statues of many
Hindu Gods and Goddesses in the temple complex. There are also arrangements for staying in the temple complex for devotees who come from outside Agartala.
There is a dome at the top of the temple along with an arched roof. The orange-coloured four-storeyed tower also known as the ‘Shikhara’ rises from an octagonal
plinth and is one of the striking features of the temple. The temple also sees a confluence of Hemadpanthi and Arabic style. However, the interiors have a Hindu
flair with the pillars and walls depicting stories of Lord Krishna.

Neermahal :-

Neermahal or the water palace stands proudly on a marshy island in Rudrasagar Lake. The palace is no doubt the pride and honour of Tripura, for it is extremely gorgeous.

You do not need to enter into the Neermahal Palace in Tripura to admire its beauty. The milky white building with a red coloured base looks striking
even from the other side of the lake. Located about 53 km from Agartala, the capital of Tripura in Melaghar, Neermahal was one of our favourite places in Tripura.
We visited Neermahal after our stay in Unakoti and Udaipur. There are quite a number of interesting places to visit in Udaipur as well, mostly temples and lakes. Neermahal is infact only 25km from Udaipur and can be visited while on your stay there.

The exquisite designs of the palace and the watery ambience mesmerized anyone and everyone visiting the Neermahal Palace. The palace has two main sections,
the inner sanctum palace or Andar Mahal where the royals reside and the outer sanctum where gardens, courtyard, fountains and the eastern open-air theatre were built.
The step of the palace into the lake is called Rajghat, where the king used to bate & swim. Touring the palace is a great way to know the history and culture
of the Tripura. The palace is greatly decorated during festive occasions and is well connected being close to Agartala.

Haveli Museum :-

Haveli Museum is a famous piligrimage in the city of Agartala, Tripura. It mentions briefly its history, origin and the cates,cultivation and other cultural aspects of the region. It is located in Agartala, at a distance of 7 Kms from city centre.

The Haveli museum is relatively small but is well maintained and highly informative museum which throws light on the various cultures which
have played roles in shaping the model of Tripura as state. The models are well displayed and visitors can spend one to to hours in the museu

Haveli Museum of Agartala is a famous site of interest and is visited by tourists on a large scale. There is no specific season for paying a casual visit to this museum. It welcomes the guests throughout the year. Thus, it can be easily reached during any time of the year.

However, one should take prior information about the status of the museum because, on all national holidays and festivals, Haveli Museum remains closed for all visitors.
